From their product description, it says Huggies Natural Care baby wipes contain 99% purified water and 1% essential ingredients made out of items no.2-no.10. Polypropylene and wood pulp are the materials used to make the wipes.
Purified water is used as a medium to prevent bacteria growth and mold contamination. It contains small amount of aloe leaf juice as a skin conditioner to keep baby’s skin smooth and moist.
Preservative that they used in Natural Care products is sodium benzoate. It is a safe preservative commonly used in food. It will keep the wipes fresh and free from bacteria.
Butoxy PEG-4 PG-Amodimethicone is used by the manufacturer to make the wipes softer and they slide gently across the baby’s skin.
Polysorbate 20 is a surfactant, emulsifier and fragrance ingredients. It is useful to degrease oil and emulsify it and allow them to be washed away. It is also used as a fragrance ingredient as polysorbate 20 is derived from sugar alcohol found in sweet smelling fruits.
Malic acid and sodium citrate (Some use Trisodium Citrate dihydrate) are used as a pH adjuster, to match with our natural skin’s pH so that it is gentle to our baby’s skin.
Caprylyl Glycol is used as humectant which is usually add in skincare product to lock in moisture and keep skin soft and moist. It is safe to use.
Tocopheryl Acetate is a form of vitamin E found in skincare and supplements. It has antioxidant properties to protect our baby’s skin against UV( ultraviolet) rays.
Coco-Betaine is a type of cleansing agent in Huggies wipes to help cleanse skin.
All of these ingredients are less than 1% of usage. Some people may raise their concern about the contamination of other chemicals such as ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane during the making of polysorbate 20 and Butoxy PEG-4 PG-Amodimethicone which may link to skin allergy.
Looking back from pass history, Huggies has done a great improvement in their formulation to get rid of methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and phenoxyethanol. These components are common allergen, may cause skin reaction. Nowadays, their baby wipes are safer to use.
