In case you missed the article, here’s a summary:
What is Colic?
A colicky baby is someone who cries and fusses a lot for no apparent physical or medical reason. Sometimes these cries would last for a long time. It usually starts when babies are a few days or weeks old, and they might look like they’re in pain.
It can be very difficult or impossible for parents to comfort the babies when they are in this state. It can be upsetting and frustrating, especially for mothers who are still recovering from postpartum. Colic adds up to the pressure and stress new mothers have to go through.
In some studies, “colic can threaten a parent’s mental health, harm family relationships. Parents are more likely to become depressed if their babies suffer from colic. When parents are depressed, babies are at high risk of developing insecure attachment relationships.”
Pauli-Pott et al. 2000
If you’re a parent struggling with a colicky baby, feeling helpless, angry, and rejected, you should know that you are not alone.
Colic is found in both breastfed and formula-fed infants. It’s found among babies born pre-term and babies born full-term. Exposure to tobacco smoke is a risk factor, but colic is also common among infants of non-smokers. Nevertheless, you should not blame yourself.
If you think your baby is suffering from colic, make sure to consult your Paediatrician or child and family health nurse.
The good news is that some baby drops can cure colic for babies. It is supported by many researches that probiotic may have a role in treatment of baby colic. The most commonly used in probiotic strain is called Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L.reuteri) and it is the most studied probiotic strain which has proven to be efficient and safe.

BioGaia Probiotic Review
Probiotics are good bacteria that are found in food or supplements. The definition is” Live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”
Here are the products developed by BioGaia:

- Helping to maintain immune function
Both products are made of same ingredients: sunflower oil, natural palm kernel oil, L. reuteri Protectis and latter one contains additional vitamin D3.
L. reuteri is proven to help improve the digestion which experts believe that infantile colic maybe due to immature immune system struggling with bacterial imbalances in the gastrointestinal tract. Research has shown that existence of E.coli (bad bacteria) in baby stool samples will be reduced after taking probiotic drop. This bad bacteria may be causing the colic symptom in newborn. Therefore, with probiotic therapy, or with the existence of good bacteria is able to restore bacterial balance in the gut. Crying and fussing time is greatly reduced too.
The unique benefits of BioGaia Protectis Probiotic Drop with Vitamin D:
It contains the proprietary lactic acid bacterium L. reuteri Protectis (L. reuteri DSM 17938) and Vitamin D3, which helps the good microorganisms restore a natural balance in the gut. Verdict: BioGaia Protectis Probiotic Works!
It was my neighbor, Diana, who tried the BioGaia Protectis Probiotics for her six-month-old baby who suffered from passing gas. I was hesitant to recommend it because I never tried it myself, but the reviews we found online sound promising. Besides, I can see that my friend could really use some good night’s sleep.
Since Diana was breastfeeding, she dropped a few amounts on her breast. We waited for the results that came on the third day. Her baby boy began to poop normally, which means the fussiness totally stopped. When I asked her if she will continuously use it, she said yes, because finally she can catch up with sleep. The last time I saw her, she also looked a little better. With that, I can conclude that BioGaia Probiotic works for Diana’s baby.
Keep in mind, however, that different children can have different reactions to this. Just because it works for Diana, it will work for your baby. At least, it is good to know that there are other remedies aside from waiting for colic to subside.
